Council will put up barriers 'as soon as they can' after spate of traveller incursions on Guildford green

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 10:05am 13th August 2019.

Guildford Borough Council has said they will erect barriers as soon as possible on Bellfields Green in Guildford to stop further unauthorised traveller encampments.

It follows the latest incursion over the weekend - the fourth on the same site in the residential area of the town within the past month.

The group pitched up on Sunday (11 August) but left the site in Hazel Avenue voluntarily later that same day.

Earlier this year the council carried out a consultation over installing a boundary to prevent unauthorised encampments on the green.

Almost three quarters (72 per cent) of respondents were in favour of some sort of boundary, although not fencing.

However to date no such barrier has appeared, during a summer in which residents have seen several incursions on the green.

Guildford Borough Council says that's because they're still "in the procurement stage of appointing a contractor to carry out the works" and added they "will proceed as soon as we can".

A group of travellers have also pitched up at Abbotswood Paddock in Guildford this week, the council said they were aware and "are in the process of doing all we can, as quickly as possible working with the Police to resolve the issue".
