Boris chosen as new Prime Minister

Boris chosen as new Prime Minister

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 12:05pm 23rd July 2019. (Updated at 12:16pm 23rd July 2019)

Boris Johnson has won the Conservative Party leadership race to become the UK's new Prime Minister.

He beat the foreign secretary and South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt after 16 hustings, two head-to-head TV debates and weeks of campaigning.

Mr Johnson won with 92,153 votes and Mr Hunt with 46,656 votes.

Mr Johnson was widely predicted to win over enough of the roughly 160,000 Tory Party members who were eligible to vote for their new leader.

The next step is for Theresa May to head to Buckingham Palace to offer her resignation to the Queen.

Her Majesty will meet the new Tory leader and invite him to form a new government.

Traditionally, the new PM will make a statement in Downing Street before stepping into Number 10 tomorrow.

Appointments to the cabinet and ministerial team are expected on Thursday, and the reshuffle could continue into Friday
