Thunderstorms and heavy rain set to lash Surrey and Hampshire

Thunderstorms and heavy rain set to lash Surrey and Hampshire

Published by Carol Musgrave at 8:44am 18th June 2019.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms comes into force in our area later.

It starts at 6pm and is set to last until 9pm tomorrow night (June 19).

The 15 hour warning follows an already wet June so far in Surrey and Hampshire.

Greg Dewhurst from the Met Office tells us to to brace ourselves for thunder, lightning and heavy rain:

"We could see trees struck, perhaps even buildings and houses as well.

"The main thing will be some intense rainfall and even hail as well - and we could also see some flash flooding."

Travel could also be disrupted, with difficult driving conditions and cancellations to some train and bus services.

Weather warning

Greg told Eagle there is no indication yet that we are in for a warm, dry summer:

"There is no sign, at the moment, of prolonged high pressure building up, no heatwave, no prolonged spells of sunshine.

"It's a complete contrast to this time in June last year."

Here is the five day forecast for Surrey and Hampshire:

Today:
A dry and bright start, but thickening cloud and some showery rain soon spreading from the southwest during the morning. The odd heavier burst is likely, before showers tend to ease from the west in the afternoon. Maximum temperature 20 °C.

Tonight:
Further showers in places this evening, but showers likely to merge to bring some more persistent and locally heavy and thundery rain overnight. Minimum temperature 12 °C.

Wednesday:
Outbreaks of locally heavy and thundery rain in the east at first. Otherwise mostly cloudy with further showery rain spreading east, but drier and brighter in the west later. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:
Breezy on Thursday with sunny intervals, but with occasional showers developing. Friday and Saturday should be dry and settled with some sunny spells, but rather chilly overnight.
