Cobham drug-dealer jailed for three and a half years

Ricky Dent, 42, of Gavell Road, Cobham

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 3:32pm 11th June 2019.

A drug dealer from Cobham who tried to evade officers when he was spotted in his car has been jailed for more than three years.

In March officers patrolling in Walton-on-Thames during the early hours of the morning noticed Ricky Dent’s car trying to give them the slip.

Using their mobile data terminal they checked the number plate and believed the car had no insurance and an expired MOT so they pulled him over.

Dent, 42, of Gavell Road, Cobham, tried to argue he had only bought the car earlier that day but, when asked to prove it, he claimed he had forgotten his wallet.

Police officers could smell what they believed was cannabis and detained him under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, searching him and locating a quantity of cash, scales and a knife.

They also suspected he was driving under the influence and a drug swipe tested positive for cocaine, leading to his arrest.

In custody, Dent was further searched and a quantity of drugs were found hidden in his clothes. These were later confirmed to be cocaine and heroin.

During interview Dent admitted having the drugs on him but claimed he simply knew where someone was storing some so just went to take them.

At Guildford Crown Court on 31 May he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of possessing Class A drugs with intent to supply, possession of a bladed article and possession of Class B drugs.

Inspector Dallas McDermott, Borough Commander for Elmbridge, said:

“I hope this sends a strong message to anyone supplying drugs that this crime will not be tolerated in our communities and you will be caught.

“I commend the officers who noticed Dent’s evasive driving and acted on their suspicions as it has ultimately led to a drug dealer being imprisoned.

“I would encourage anyone with concerns about drugs to report the information to us. Intelligence, no matter how small it may seem, allows us to build up a bigger picture of any local activity, identify possible offenders and target our patrols.”
