Petition launched for Surrey Heath to Heathrow Airport bus service

Heathrow Airport

Published by Local Democracy Reporter Rebecca Curley at 6:00am 22nd May 2019.

A fast bus service is needed between Surrey Heath and Heathrow Airport in a bid to cut down car usage, says a campaigner.

Former Surrey county councillor Denis Fuller says a better public transport connection is needed for the thousands of residents in Surrey Heath who work or access the airport for holidays but cannot use public transport to get there.

He says that with people being concerned about climate change and more aware of the environment, now is the time to look at better bus routes.

Mr Fuller, who was a SCC councillor for eight years and current member of The Camberley Society, has launched a petition to try and put pressure on council bosses to consider implementing the bus route.

He raised the idea or a bus starting in Camberley and going along the A30 stopping at various places up to Virginia Water before going on to the airport a few years ago with neighbouring councillors and officers.

But he was told there was not the funding and it was hard to gather interest.

Mr Fuller said: “We cannot get to Heathrow from Camberley by public transport.

“Now there is more public awareness about global warming I think now might be the time to get on with it.

“I think now with the new third runway looking likely to go ahead I think the time has come to seriously start thinking about it again.”

Mr Fuller believes it could save around 80 car journeys a day.

The petition on the Surrey County Council website says:  “Many Surrey Heath residents work and/or fly from LHR. We have no direct rail or bus links to LHR.

“The pressure on politicians to step-up action against Global Warming & Climate Change has intensified recently.

“A fast bus service to LHR would carry passengers who otherwise must use cars or taxis.

“When I was a Surrey county councillor ( 2009-2017) I used to regularly use the X26 fast bus service ( Croydon to LHR). Quite recently the operators replaced the single decker bus with a double decker.

“Such a service could involve buses starting from Farnborough and stopping at The Meadows, Camberley RMAS gate, Camberley Fire Station, Bagshot, Windlesham, Sunningdale Station, Virginia Water, Egham.”

The petition can be found on the Surrey County Council website.
