New leader for Guildford Borough Council

New leader for Guildford Borough Council

Published by Carol Musgrave at 8:09am 16th May 2019. (Updated at 8:20am 16th May 2019)

It is all change at Guildford Borough Council where a new leader is in place.

It comes after the Conservatives were defeated at the local elections earlier this month, leaving no group with overall control.

Liberal Democrat Caroline Reeves was elected to the role at a meeting last night (May 15) with 23 votes, replacing Paul Spooner.

It was a close contest, with Joss Bigmore from Residents for Guildford and Villages (R4GV) just four votes behind.

Councillor Reeves was helped over the finishing line with votes from Conservative and Labour councillors.

The Lib Dems are now the biggest party on the council with 17 seats, usurping the Conservatives who lost 25 seats, leaving them with nine.

Second largest group with 15 seats is R4GV.

It is the first time since 2003 that the Tories are not in charge at the council.

Cllr Reeves said:

"Voters have clearly said they want change and as a Lib Dem Council we will give them that.

"We are looking forward to working with colleagues from across all parties for the benefit of Guildford Borough and will be reaching out to form a more politically diverse executive to deliver a new type of politics here in Guildford."

She said the Lib Dems are going to demand an independent review of the borough's Local Plan.

Other priorities include focussing on combatting climate change, and striving " for more open governance at Millmead".
