Bid to make Ash Vale Station step free rejected

Bid to make Ash Vale Station step free rejected

Published by Josh Kerr at 1:16pm 12th April 2019.

Campaigners say they're not giving up after a bid to make Ash Vale station step free was turned down.

More than 2,000 people had signed a petition calling for better access, but an application by South Western Railway for government funding did not make the 73 strong list of approved sites.

Passengers using the station currently have to climb four flights of stairs to reach the platforms.

It is estimated to cost between £2-3m to provide the changes needed.

Local resident Daniel McHugh started the petition, reacting to failed bid he said:

"It was very disappointing news, very surprising to be honest as well because everyone involved was very confident it would be successful.

"Most days when I'm coming and going from the station I would see someone struggling, see someone trying to drag their buggy up the flights of stairs, see elderly people holding onto the railings.

"It's totally unacceptable Ash Vale station should be made available to all."

South Western Railway Managing Director, Andy Mellors, confirmed the bid had been unsuccessful and added the station would be in future bids for funding.

Surrey Heath MP Michael Gove had previously written to Transport Secretary Chris Grayling on the poor access to the station.

In response to the news he said:

“I am deeply disappointed that the bid for step-free access at Ash Vale station was unsuccessful, and I will be raising this with the Transport Secretary.”

A Department for Transport spokesperson said:

“Regrettably the Access for All programme was heavily oversubscribed, meaning that many strong nominations were not successful.

“Should further funding become available for the programme, we would welcome a future nomination for Ash Vale station.”
