Royal Surrey maternity unit goes green with new digital care service

Published by Josh Kerr at 6:00am 1st March 2019.

The Royal Surrey expects to save more than 175,000 sheets of paper a year with its new digital maternity care service which launches today.

Expectant mums will now be able to access their personal care plan, test results and information about their pregnancy from their phones 24 hours a day.

In addition to the positive environmental impact, staff at the maternity unit say the move will also save staff time and offer mums better piece of mind.

Mum Kate Hutchings, who is expecting her third child in April, has been trialling the service over the past few weeks and says more than anything the change will mean not having to "lug around" the familiar stacks of yellow notes mums will have been accustom to in the past.

She added:

"It's great, I don't have to worry about having my notes with me or where I've left them because I'm still commuting, so there not going to get left on the train or wherever - they're with me all the time."

The system – which can only be accessed by verified account users and medical professionals – allows mums real-time access to the most up-to-date information about their pregnancy.

It also allows them to add information which they can discuss with midwives at their next appointment and keep a diary of their pregnancy experience which are completely confidential for mums’ access only.

Royal Surrey Deputy Head of Midwifery Amy Stubbs said:

"It provides a much more seamless ability for clinicians to access records wherever they are seeing women.

"We've estimated it's around 175,000 sheets of paper a year that we won't be generating, which obviously has huge cost implications and also environmental benefits through not generating all that paper which is a massive plus for us as a service."

Papers services will still be available to those without access to a smart device.

You can find out more about the service from the Royal Surrey's website.
