Pay-as-you-go train travel could extend to Guildford and Aldershot

South Western Railway trains

Published by Josh Kerr at 5:21pm 14th February 2019.

Pay-as-you-go train travel could be extended across Surrey and Hampshire if new plans by the Department of Transport go ahead.

A consultation on the proposals has been launched, which would see passengers able to use contactless payment at ticket barriers at stations including Guildford, Woking and Aldershot.

It is thought the changes would be more convenient for passengers by saving time queueing at ticket machines and avoid them having to work out which fare they would need.

According to the consultation report, the changes could also save passengers money by seeing fare caps introduced or changes for those travelling at quieter times of the day.

In the report the Department of Transport said:

"There is the potential for a joined-up PAYG travel area that focuses on travel to, from and around London by rail.

"Passengers would be able to travel seamlessly between all rail services in the area and on the Transport for London (TfL) network, all using the same PAYG scheme.

"We are exploring options to make complementary changes to fares and to introduce capping, so that there is a maximum amount you can pay over day and/or week for making a particular journey, no matter how many times you travel.

"We want more people to travel by rail, and PAYG might help to encourage them.

Under the proposed changes to the pay-as-you-go area Farnborough North would become contactless, but not Farnborough main.
