A man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with stabbing a mother of four to death in Ewell.

39 year old Aliny Mendes died at the roadside on Friday (January 8) after a man got out of his car and launched the attack.

It happened at around 3pm at the Sparrow Farm Road junction of London Road on Friday (February 8).

41 year old Ricardo Godinho, of Kingston Road in Epsom, appeared at Staines Magistrates Court court on Monday morning.

The case was referred to Guildford Crown Court where Mr Godinho was remanded in custody until 15 March.

A plea and trial preparation hearing will take place.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Chapman said:

“I can now confirm that the Aliny Mendes and Ricardo Godinho were married, but had separated. However, I would continue to urge people not to speculate about the details around the circumstances of what happened, and that if anyone has any information that which could help with our investigation, to get in touch with us.

“I would like to thank the community for the help and support they have provided over the last few days. They have really pulled together at what is an extremely difficult time for all.

"We have received a phenomenal amount of contact from those who witnessed the incident, and this has been a tremendous help to our investigation.”

Officers will continue to patrol Ewell and provide reassurance to the public following the tragic incident on Friday.

A post-mortem examination has concluded that Aliny died as a result of stab wounds.
