M3 CLOSED due to stranded cars

M3 CLOSED due to stranded cars

Published by Lucinda Horsley at 6:12pm 1st February 2019. (Updated at 9:26pm 1st February 2019)

Snow has caused the M3 to partially close this evening, with police advising drivers not to travel unless "absolutely critical".

The road was initially shut from Junction 6-7 westbound due to "multiple stranded vehicles and severe weather conditions", Highways England said.

One lane has now been reopened but severe delays remain with traffic at a standstill.

A fallen tree has now also partially blocked the London-bound carriageway and Highways warn drivers to approach with care.

Local roads off the motorway have also been affected by weather and strategic traffic

Some cars been stuck for up to two hours and there are three jackknifed lorries around Basingstoke.

Lorries were said to be struggling on the inclines in Basingstoke with several callers reporting the traffic is stationary and the road is "virtually impassable".

Traffic on the M3 begins after J4 at Farnborough with severe delays up to the closure at Junction 6.

It comes as Surrey and Hampshire has been issued with a new yellow weather warning for snow until 8pm this evening.

Flurries have been spotted in a number of areas across our two counties.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert for ice has also been issued by the Met Office for area.

It has been effect since 1pm this afternoon (February 1) and is currently set to remain in force until 11am on Saturday.

Icy stretches are expected as the snow slowly eases away.

Elsewhere, there has been chaos on other major roads and surrounding routes in Surrey and Hampshire due to the snow.

Surrey Road Cops have been advising drivers to take care and not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
