A food store in Aldershot has been cautioned after it was found to be selling mouldy food.

Shaban Halal Foods in Station Road was visited by an environmental health officer in December after a complaint was made about mouldy sweets.

The shop also had cheese past its use-by date for sale and it was discovered the display fridge was dirty and operating well above the legal temperature for high-risk foods.

A ‘zero’ rating under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme was issued due to a lack of monitoring procedures being implemented and for no effective controls being in place.

During the visit the store disposed of several food items and made immediate improvements, with a follow-up visit finding that the store was maintaining the improved standards.

Mouldy sweets
Indian-style Cham Cham sweets had mould on, while packs of paneer cheese were out of date.

Councillor Maurice Sheehan, Rushmoor Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Operational Services, said:

“Selling food after the use-by date or in mouldy condition can have very serious consequences for both the retailer and the consumer.

“This case demonstrates that the council is committed to protecting the public and that it is unacceptable for food businesses to disregard their duty to protect the safety of food for their customers.

“I hope this case will remind traders of the importance of regularly checking their stock, and also reassure residents that our officers will continue their work to protect them by inspecting premises and taking appropriate action where necessary and I fully support this staged approach.”
