Warning of phone scam in Blackwater

Published by Carol Musgrave at 5:44am 25th January 2019. (Updated at 6:21am 25th January 2019)

We are being warned of fraudsters who have been posing as police officers in Blackwater.

Police say they have been phoning elderly people and encouraging them to withdraw thousands of pounds from their bank accounts.

In one similar case elsewhere, a man in his eighties was told by a cold caller that he had been targeted by fraudsters and that he needed to take £4,000 out of his bank account.

He was told not to tell bank staff why he wanted the money - and to stay on the phone while he was in the bank.

Police said staff however became suspicious and called the police - and no money was lost.

Officers say this is a common scam often affecting older or more vulnerable people.

They say the police, banks or any other authorities will never call people in this way.

The advice from police is if you do get a similar call, to hang up and report it to police on 101, or 999 if a crime is in progress.

Make a note of the date and time of the call, and the number, if available - this information could help any future investigation.

They say you should never reveal your bank details or give personal information to people who cold call.

They are also appealing to people to explain the advice to those who could be taken in by such a scam.
