Fire on Ripley farm two days after police raid

Hurst Farm Ripley

Published by Carol Musgrave at 12:17pm 11th January 2019.

An investigation is underway after a vehicle caught fire on Hurst Farm in Ripley.

It comes less than 48 hours after a police raid there - when more than 200 animals were removed over welfare concerns.

Firefighters were called to Portsmouth Road shortly after midnight today (January 11) to find a lorry alight.

In a statement, Surrey Fire and Rescue said:

"We were called at around 12.05am to a fire in Portsmouth Road, Ripley.

"Three fire engines were sent to deal with a lorry which was on fire.

"This was extinguished and we left at around 1.50am.”

Surrey Fire and Rescue will be investigating the cause of the blaze.

On Wednesday (January 9) a multi-agency raid on the farm took place, involving the police and led by the RSPCA, as they executed a warrant under the Animal Welfare Act.

In total 123 horses, eight donkeys and 59 dogs, were taken away.

Speaking of the raid,  a spokesperson from the RSPCA said an "investigation is now ongoing so we can’t go into any further detail at this time."
