WATCH: Man pickpocketed leaving Surrey Waitrose

West Byfleet Pickpocket

Published by Josh Kerr at 11:24am 10th January 2019. (Updated at 9:47am 11th January 2019)

A pickpocket has been fined £280 after taking a wallet from a man at a Waitrose supermarket in Surrey.

The incident happened at the West Byfleet store last month, with the perpetrator arrested after being stopped by a security guard.

CCTV footage released by police shows the pickpocket lying in wait, before approaching the victim and reaching into his coat.

See the brazen offence for yourself:

Officers say they have released the footage to demonstrate how quickly items can be taken.

Following the incident on 7 December, Iulian Vinatoru was arrested at the scene and a subsequent investigation resulted in charges being levied against him.

The 48 year old from Leicester then pleaded guilty to the offence at Guildford Magistrates Court on 2 January and was fined £280, as well as ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £30.

Surrey Police advice to keep your belongings safe:

  • Do keep purses and bags closed and secure at all times.
  • Do carry bags in front of you or diagonally across your chest.
  • Do return cards to your purse or wallet quickly and zip it up or button it.
  • Do use a purse that’s difficult to open. One that zips or snaps shut is best, and keep it closed.
  • Do use a money belt if you’re carrying a significant quantity of cash.
  • Do conceal your wallet in a buttoned or zipped pocket where it doesn’t bulge.
  • Do keep a list, separate from your wallet and phone, of contact numbers of family in case your phone is stolen.
  • Do keep a photocopy of your airline tickets, passport, credit cards and any other documents that would be impossible or inconvenient to replace if stolen.
  • Don’t hang stuff on the back of a chair.
  • Don’t leave anything on the back of a pushchair.
  • Don’t place your belongings out of sight on the floor.
