Surrey County Council to leave Kingston "by 2020"

Surrey County Council to leave Kingston "by 2020"

Published by Josh Kerr at 5:08pm 11th December 2018.

The new leader of Surrey County Council has announced they are to leave their offices in Kingston upon Thames.

Tim Oliver, who was elected at a meeting of the council this morning, used his opening speech at County Hall to say they would be leaving the site by the end of 2020.

He said the motivation behind it was to get the council closer to its residents, after being too far away from the communities they serve for too long.

Cllr Oliver stopped short of saying where the new headquarters of the authority would be, but did later confirm that they would be looking at existing sites within the county, rather than building a new base.

In his opening speech to council, Cllr Oliver said:

“For too long the emotional connection to a community has been taken for granted.

"For 50 years we have not been close enough to the residents we serve, and we all represent.

"I have therefore asked the officers to start the detailed planning for the relocation of the people in this building back in to the county of Surrey."

Natalie Bramhall, the county councillor for Redhill West and Meadvale, has been appointed a Deputy Cabinet member and handed responsibility for finding the council a “suitable new home”.

Cllr Oliver took over the reigns of leader from David Hodge, who stepped down from the role after seven years.
