A man is being questioned on suspicion of an attempted child abduction at a local Christmas fair.

He was arrested in Egham on Saturday (8 December) after trying to offer sweets and toys to a 6-year-old girl

Police say they are continuing to review local CCTV; and speak to other witnesses that have come forward as a result of their appeal.

Detectives are also reassuring parents that these types of incidents are rare

"We would like to reassure parents that, while the man is unknown to the child, the child did not leave the immediate vicinity of their parent; and although understandably scared, the child was not physically harmed during the incident.

Officers were on the scene within minutes of it being reported and promptly arrested the man.

Incidents of this type are very rare and we would ask for the public to allow us to carry out our work and investigate fully, rather than jumping to conclusions."

In order to piece together the man's movements and motives, police would like to speak to any parents of children who think they were also approached by the man during the event on Saturday.

The man is described as:

  • White, around 50 years, around 5ft 9 tall and of a slight build.
  • wearing a grey cap, a black jacket, jeans, trainers and glasses and was carrying a black rucksack.

If your child was approached, or you have other information that can assist Surrey Police enquiry, please call them on 101.

Crime Reference number: PR/45180130630.
