Final strike action of the month on South Western Railway

Trains South Western Railway

Published by Carol Musgrave at 12:56pm 22nd November 2018.

The final strike action of the month gets underway on South Western Railway later with no end in sight to the row between the operator and the RMT union.

The 24 hour action starts at 00:01 tomorrow morning (November 24) and ends at 23:59.

SWR says only half of its normal Saturday services will run.

It says rail replacement services and ticket acceptance on other bus and rail networks have been organised where possible.

Fans going to the international rugby test between England and Australia at Twickehnham are advised to allow extra time for their journey - as these services are expected to be busier than usual.

There will be 12 South Western Railway trains per hour between Waterloo and Twickenham.

The ongoing dispute is in a row over the role of guards on trains, and comes after a five day strike earlier this month and two further strikes earlier this month.

A South Western Railway spokesperson said:

“We have repeatedly guaranteed to roster a train guard on every single service we run. Our plans mean more guards, not fewer.

“It’s time for the RMT union to commit to resolving their dispute which only causes misery for customers.

“We will do everything we can to keep customers moving and reduce disruption whenever the RMT strikes.”

The RMT has previously said the strike action comes "as the company continues to refuse to engage in a serious talks process that could reach an agreement in the long running guards' safety dispute. ‎"
