"Help little feet to walk" - Farnborough family appeal to fund Cerebral Palsy operation

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 6:01am 19th November 2018.

A Farnborough family are appealing for help to fund a life changing operation after the birth of twins with Cerebral Palsy.

At 21 months neither Matthew or Lucy Johnson can walk, with Lucy also unable to sit up unassisted. Although Lucy has a chance of developing the ability to walk, Matthew does not and will instead need treatment.

Lucy has been diagnosed with dystonia and hemiplegia (affecting her total right side and both her legs) and Matthew with spastic diplegia (affecting both of his legs).

Despite Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy, a neurosurgical procedure designed to reduce spasticity (a tightness of the muscles) in the legs and ankles, now being available on the NHS - it has a waiting list of several years.

Lucy and Matthew's parents, David and Nikki say they fear seeing their children miss out on key development if they don't get treatment now, although it comes at a cost of around £50,000.

Matthew and Lucy

Currently, while Lucy has a chance of being able to develop walking, they are only trying to raise the funds needed for Matthew to have the operation.

On what getting the treatment for Matthew would mean, David and Nikki said:

"This is the difference between a little boy being in a wheelchair for the rest of his life or a little boy who can go out and play with his friends and kick a football.

"It would be everything because the things we've thought about - he can do stuff himself, he can go and make his own decision and his own choices."
