First ever Surrey pride event to be in Woking

Published by Josh Kerr at 4:03pm 14th August 2018.

The first ever pride event in Surrey is going to take place next year in Woking.

Earlier this month plans were announced to create an event in the county, but both a venue and date were yet to be confirmed.

Now it has been revealed Surrey's inaugural LGBT+ pride event will take place on 10 August 2019 in Woking Park. It will be a free event.

Following the announcement of the venue, organisers said: "With so many amazing places in Surrey it was difficult for the team to pick out a host borough however it was evident from the off that Woking ticked many of the requirements.

"With good transport links, good accessibility and the local regeneration of Woking the team embarked on a journey to secure the location on the date confirmed."

Among those behind the idea is Stephen Ireland, a host and compere at various prides across the country including UK Pride on the Isle of Wight and Pride in London.

He said: “I have been inspired by various Pride events across the UK this year alongside charities such as Outline Surrey and Educate & Celebrate.

"2019 will mark the 50th year of Stonewall but it will also mark the first  year of an LGBT+ Pride event in Surrey and I am thrilled to be working with such a supportive council and the CEO of Outline Surrey, to not only create an amazing event but also raise awareness of the available support to those within the community."

Mayor of Woking, Cllr Will Forster, added: “We are delighted that Woking will host the inaugural Pride in Surrey parade. It is another example of Woking’s growing reputation for hosting colourful and inclusive annual events.

“Pride in Surrey celebrates the inclusion and diversity of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT+) culture and community within Surrey.

"With Stephen’s wealth of experience working on both UK and international Pride events, I have no doubt that he and the team will create a parade second to none that will bring together all communities within Surrey and beyond.”
