Plans to bring pride to Surrey

Published by Josh Kerr at 11:40am 1st August 2018. (Updated at 11:08am 2nd August 2018)

Plans have been announced to create a pride event in Surrey.

The news comes ahead of this weekend's Brighton Pride, the biggest pride festival in the UK.

It's hoped the inaugural 'Pride in Surrey' event will take place in 2019.

Among those behind the idea is Stephen Ireland, a host and compere at various prides across the country including UK Pride on the Isle of Wight and Pride in London.

Organisers said: "The mission of ‘Pride in Surrey’ is to celebrate the inclusion and diversity of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT+) culture and community within Surrey and neighbouring counties.

"We’ll make it our mission to educate both the general community and the LGBT+ communities about the needs, troubles and various other aspects of LGBT+ culture.

"We’ll also celebrate these communities and provide a forum to share the history and accomplishments of the LGBT+ people whilst establish how we can also improve and educate those who don’t necessarily understand it."

A date is yet to be set for the event and organisers are currently looking for volunteers to help make it a reality.
