£1 million up for grabs for rescue charities

3:26pm 11th July 2018

A funding competition has opened for rescue charities to bid for money for new equipment.

The Rescue Boat Fund, which has been running for five years, has so far given charities £3.6 million, helping them buy almost 100 boats and other craft, as well as nearly 4,000 items of crew kit and more than 1,400 other pieces of equipment to support their life saving work.

Surrey Search and Rescue team is among the charities that has benefited from a new rescue boat.

James Turnball helps run the Water Rescue team within Surrey Search and Rescue said: "We would never have been able to purchase such an asset as we have now with our rescue boat and to be able to work with the Department of Transport to get the funding for that has just step-changed our water rescue capabilities.

We wouldn't have been able to save up and afford to buy such a brilliant asset. We can deploy onto much more significant stretches of water, like the River Thames, before that [the funding] we would never have been able to take part in those operational activities."

The competition comes as part of Maritime Safety Week, which highlights the work being done across the UK to cut the number of lives lost at sea or on rivers.

So far this week, the Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani, has held met the UK Chamber of Shipping and visited Shell’s London headquarters to discover more about its Partners in Safety initiative to drive down casualties at sea.

Today (11 July) Nusrat Ghani will host a MP round table meeting on fishing vessel safety to promote recent work to improve safety in the industry, which is currently the most dangerous in the UK with 92 lives lost since 2006.
