Travellers Bannisters field

(Updated 10:25am 14th June 2018)

Travellers have been spotted at another recreation ground in Guildford in the latest among several encampments on public sites in Surrey.

Reports say they are at Bannisters field - an open green space and playground - near Tesco.

It comes after more than 30 caravans left Stoke Park yesterday (June 13) after they were served a direction to leave by Guildford Borough Council.

In a statement, today the council said: "We are aware of the traveller encampment on Bannisters Field, near the Royal Surrey County Hospital, and are in the process of doing all we can, as quickly as possible.

"The travellers, who were previously at Stoke Park, arrived last night, will be served with a notice directing them to leave as soon as possible.

"We are working with the police who are also aware of the current situation. If the caravans and accompanying vehicles have not left site in accordance with the direction to leave, we will take further action through the legal process.

"We are monitoring the situation and have provided the occupants with bin bags, and made arrangements to remove any rubbish."

The council said residents can contact customer services with questions about encampments, or to report rubbish, at 01483 505050 or email customerservices@guildford.gov.uk

It said for anti-social behaviour or criminal activity, contact Surrey Police on their non-emergency number 101 or 999 in an emergency only.

Woking and Waverley Borough Councils also served similar papers on travellers who had pitched up in St John's Lye in Woking and Farnham central car park earlier this week.

Both groups have since left. Travellers in Farnham left at 20:00 last night, and were due in court today if they did not comply.
