Travellers occupy Stoke Park in Guildford

Travellers Stoke Park

Published by Carol Musgrave at 8:22am 13th June 2018. (Updated at 8:17pm 13th June 2018)

Caravans have been spotted at Guildford's Stoke Park.

More than 30 are encamped on the London Road side of the park - near to Guildford High School's sports centre.

Guildford Borough Council said: "We are aware of the traveller encampment at Stoke Park in Guildford and are in the process of doing all we can, as quickly as possible.

"The travellers, who arrived at the park last night (12 June), will be served with a notice directing them to leave as soon as practically possible.

"We are working with the police who are also aware of the current situation. If the caravans and accompanying vehicles do not vacate the site in accordance with the direction to leave, we will take further action through the legal process."

Guildford Parkrun, which takes place each week in the park, is currently under threat if the group are still in the park come Saturday.

Over the past few days, travellers also pitched up in Woking and Farnham - at St John's Lye in St John's village, and Farnham town centre Central Car Park.

In Farnham, Waverley Borough Council had served travellers a direction to leave by 1pm today, but having failed to do so they have now been issued with a summons to appear at Guildford Magistrates' court tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Woking Borough Council have confirmed that after serving papers to leave by 9am today, that the group at St John's Lye have moved on.
