guildford crematorium

Published by Josh Kerr at 6:00am 11th May 2018.

Work on the first phase of redeveloping Guildford Crematorium is has begun.

Guildford Borough Council are investing £10 million to replace the existing buildings with new facilities.

The redevelopment will include a chapel able to accommodate up to 200 mourners, a larger waiting room and new memorial courtyard and gardens of remembrance.

Cllr Matt Furniss, Lead Councillor for Infrastructure and Governance says: "It will allow us to offer a more personalised, flexible service and help provide a supportive and caring environment for the bereaved.

"As expectations, faiths and customs have changed over the years, we will be able to accommodate these in our new setting."

The initial work will be to provide a new access road and interim facilities while the rest of the redevelopment takes place later this summer. There will be space for up to 120 mourners to attend each service during this time.

Guildford Crematorium currently performs 1,800 cremations per year and many people also visit the memorial gardens to pay their respects.
