Farnborough Debenhams closes down

Debenhams Farnborough

6:00am 13th January 2018
(Updated 4:29pm 14th January 2018)

The Farnborough branch of Debenhams will open it doors for the last time on Saturday (January 13).

It was announced back in October that the department store at The Meads shopping centre would close down as part of a national move to cut back on the chain's high street outlets.

In April, bosses said they had identified some stores which could become unprofitable over the next five years.

It later emerged that one of those was the Farnborough store - which employs 43 people.

Debenhams said it is helping staff members there find other jobs within the company.

A Debenhams statement said: "The closure is part of The Debenhams Redesigned strategy, which was shared in April 2017. The strategy detailed that a review of the store estate had identified up to 10 stores that may become unprofitable over the next five years."

"Debenhams is in consultation with the 43 colleagues at the site and is assisting with redeployment opportunities within the business."

Speaking in April, Debenhams' new chief executive, Sergio Bucher, said: "Our customers are changing the way they shop and we are changing too.

"Shopping with Debenhams should be effortless, reliable and fun, whichever channel our customers use.

"We will be a destination for 'social shopping' with mobile the unifying platform for interacting with our customers."
