Hero officers rewarded after brutal attack on police in Aldershot

Aldershot officers PC Stuart McKane, PC Simon Reynolds and PC Amy Oliver

6:00am 12th September 2017
(Updated 5:16pm 12th September 2017)

Three Hampshire police officers have been awarded for their bravery after a brutal attack on colleagues in Aldershot.

Back in February, Simon Priest viciously attacked PC Geoff Hill and PC Karl Odgers in Pegasus Avenue.

The 41 year-old, of Pegasus Avenue, punched them and repeatedly stamped on their heads before fleeing the scene, having stolen a Taser and set of handcuffs.

PC Odgers was the most seriously injured and had to undergo emergency surgery at a specialist hospital in London.

He had sustained a fracture to his skull and a bleed on the brain, for which he spent two weeks receiving treatment at St George’s Hospital.

He was only able to return to full duties at work some two months after the assault.

Meanwhile PC Hill was assaulted with such force that footwear marks were clearly visible on his head.

He has also now returned to full duties at work.

PC Stuart McKane, PC Simon Reynolds and PC Amy Oliver were then deployed after hearing the severity of the situation.

Following a search for him the trio managed to detain Simon Priest, preventing a protracted manhunt.

In May, Priest was sentenced to life behind bars after pleading guilty to five offences including causing GBH.

PC McKane, PC Reynolds and PC Oliver have all since been recognised for their bravery that night.

All three were awarded for their exceptional bravery, courage and professionalism at the recent Chief Constable's Awards.

A statement from the force reads: "Despite being desperately concerned for their colleagues and knowing the potential danger they faced, they maintained their professionalism and courage as they continued to search for the man.

"Even when threatened with a Taser, they all reacted without fear or hesitation to detain the man without any further injuries.

"This is truly a testament to not only the officers’ bravery in the most dangerous and challenging of circumstances, but also to their outstanding professionalism in their conduct when arresting the suspect, who had seriously injured their colleagues.

"The speed and quick thinking of these officers prevented the need for a potentially protracted manhunt.
Had it not for their bravery, determination and the sheer courage of these exceptional officers, the man may not have been brought to justice."

Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney celebrated the courage and commitment of officers and staff at the special ceremony in Netley.

She said: "“Whether on duty or not, these examples of exceptional courage and professionalism have proven that we are very lucky to have such men and woman working within our communities.

“This ceremony has also highlighted how dangerous the job of an officer can be and I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that assaults on officers or staff are not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

“We have people willing to go above and beyond for the protection of others - they should be celebrated and should not fear being physically or verbally abused while simply trying to do their job.”
