Time is running out to use the old pound coins

(Updated 11:23am 13th September 2017)

In just over a month's time, the old pound coin will be removed from circulation.

From October 15th, the only pound coin that will be accepted as legal tender is the twelve-sided coin that was introduced earlier this year.

So you better get spending...

New £1 Coin

The old round coins can be traded at the bank in exchange for new ones.

Another way to rid your pockets of the outdated coins is to donate them instead...

Local children's charity 'Rainbow Trust' is encouraging people to collect any old pound coins they have and donate them.

Their 'Good Old Pounds' campaign aims to raise money to help the organisation support families of children with life-threatening illnesses.

Based in Leatherhead, the charity currently helps 150 families across Surrey by providing them with support workers.

Emma Haines is the director of marketing and fundraising at The Rainbow Trust:

"Just £23 will enable one of our family support workers to spend an hour with the family.

"It could be something as simple as taking them to a hospital appointment, or it could be giving mum a break by looking after the children."

She continues: "We are encouraging all of our supporters to dig around in the car, behind the sofa, wherever it might be - through the old money boxes and find as many pounds as they can to help us help these families that need us."

Find out how to donate your old coins here.
