Drug deaths surge in Surrey and Hampshire

Drugs

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 6:00am 21st August 2017. (Updated at 4:06pm 21st August 2017)

A record number of people were killed by drugs in England and Wales last year, with huge rises in Surrey and Hampshire.

Official figures on poisoning show there were more than 3,700 deaths nationally, two percent more than in 2015.

More than half of all deaths involved an opiate like heroin or morphine.

Between 2001 and 2016 the number of drug deaths in England and Wales increased by 46 per cent.

In Surrey, the rise is 40 per cent, with an astonishing increase of 113 per cent in Hampshire.

Surrey and Hampshire have both seen increases in deaths related to the mis-use of drugs between 2001 and 2016.

Nationally, cocaine deaths surged by 16 per cent.

Harry Shapiro from advice website Drugswise says it's getting cheaper to produce: "The wholesale price of cocaine has come down, which means there is less cutting.

"Dealers can be in competition with one another and, yes, in this case, a purer drug can be a more dangerous one."
