Scheme rolled out to prevent wildfires in Surrey

Wildfire Longmoor Camp Ranges

7:01am 12th August 2017

A new scheme is being rolled out to try and reduce the number of wildfires in Surrey's countryside..

Surrey search and rescue volunteers are going to patrol the county on mountain bikes, reminding the public how to stay safe.

It's part of plans to prevent the number of heathland fires throughout the summer, but should also help stretched resources within the fire services.

The initiative involves the use of Mountain bikes which have been funded by Local Committee’s.

The aim is for the volunteers to speak to members of the public, providing additional awareness of the importance of enjoying the countryside, whilst also being mindful.

Glyn Parry-Jones, Assistant Group Commander for Surrey Fire and Rescue said:

"The fires can grow quite large and therefore require a large number of resources from the fire and rescue service, to deal with these incidents.

"The problem we have that whilst we're dealing with them, it puts pressure on the remaining resources that would deal with the more day-to-say incidents, such as building fires and RTCs."

Members of Surrey Search and Rescue will join Surrey Fire and Rescue volunteers and when available Surrey Police, spending time riding over areas identified as at risk of wildfire within Surrey heath and Woking.

"Whilst on these patrols, they'll be stopping and talking to members of the community to try and educate them on ways of preventing accidental fires starting.

"But they'll also be giving advice on what to do - if members of the public discover a fire."
