New youth mental health drop-in centre launches in Guildford

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 7:00am 23rd July 2017. (Updated at 10:49am 24th July 2017)

A new safe house for youngsters struggling with mental health has launched in Guildford.

CYP Haven is based in the town centre and offers advice and someone to chat to for 10 to 18 year olds.

It is described as a safe place where young people can talk about worries and mental health in a confidential, friendly and supportive environment.

You do not have to call or book and appointment for CYP Haven, which has a youth mental health nurse, a youth worker and a senior children's rights peer mentor.

Although it has been open since May, the centre's official launch was on Thursday (20 July).

Jack Kennett is 21 and benefitted from help with CAMHS for his bipolar growing up.

He now works as a mentor at CYP Haven and told Eagle: "The first step towards getting help is speaking up and saying that you are struggling and then realising that you need to access services.

"I think that's really important and something that a lot of young people find difficult.

"When a lot of people don't have great relationships with their GP, services like this are fantastic.

"It's a drop-in setting so you don't need to have spoken to anyone before you come in and then potentially get sign posted to the appropriate services."

More information about the centre and how you can get involved can be found on the CYP haven website.
