Man's body found in canal near Woking

Basingstoke Canal

9:46am 16th July 2017
(Updated 9:48am 16th July 2017)

A Police investigation has been launched after a man's body was pulled out of the Basingstoke Canal in West Byfleet yesterday morning.

The body was found at Woodham Lock around 9am on Saturday by a member of the public.

While the person hasn't yet been formally identified, police believe they know the man's identity and have informed his family.

A police statement said: 'We are looking into the circumstances that led to him being found in the water, and we are treating it as suspicious.'

Investigators are 'focused on a number of enquiries to try and establish what has happened, and will be carrying out various searches in the area, as well as making house to house visits.'

They want to speak to anyone who used the towpath at Woodham Lock, or the lock bridge to cross the canal between Woodlands Avenue and Faris Lane, or the footpath to Fulbrook School.

If you saw or heard anything suspicious in the area you are encouraged to get in touch with the Police.
