Blue plaque unveiled for Aldershot's Arthur English

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 4:28pm 15th July 2017.

Aldershot's favourite son, Arthur English, was honoured in the town today.

The comedian and actor is the Aldershot Civic Society's first blue plaque to be unveiled.

English was born at 22 Lysons Road in 1919.

The singer and actor Jess Conrad OBE did the honour at 2pm, behind a huge kipper tie at his birth home, 22 years after his death.

After serving in the army during WWII, Arthur worked as a painter and decorator in his home town.

Arthur's son, Tony, made a speech at the event today (July 15) and  Conservative Councillor for Aldershot, David Clifford, tweeted his praise to the Aldershot Civic Society.

He said: "Well done @AldershotCS for organising the blue plaque for Arthur English in Lysons Road "".
