Armed Forces flag raised over Guildford

4:25pm 19th June 2017

The Armed Forces flag is flying high over Guildford today.

It has been raised at the Guildhall on the High Street ahead of Armed Forces Day on Saturday 24 June.

The Army Training Centre Pirbright has been given Freedom of the Borough and recruits will exercise that on Saturday by marching up the High Street.

The parade starts at 12:15pm from Town Bridge, ending outside Holy Trinity Church where there will be a short service and presentation of a commemorative scroll by the Mayor, Cllr Nigel Manning.

According to Guildford Borough Council, ATC Pirbright received Freedom of the Borough as recognition of their history of distinguished service and outstanding contribution to the local community and the nation.

It comes two years after thousands flocked to Guildford when the town hosted Armed Forces Day.

Leader of Guildford Borough Council, Cllr Paul Spooner told Eagle: "The flag raising is a very special event in Guildford, not just because of the success in 2015.

"Our relationship with the military is very strong and we intend to keep it that way.

"They (the recruits) will be marching up the High Street, we will be holding a reception.

"Exercising that freedom is very important for those that hold it, it is actually a very special opportunity for Guildford to thank those those that look after us."

Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Nigel Manning said: "It's very important because the Armed Forces do a great service for the country as a whole and it's very important that us in Guildford recognise that service.

"I'm looking forward to it, I always like tradition.

"It's a very important and rare tradition given by a Borough to the Army, it's not a one off but it happens very rarely. It's a bit of tradition that's great for Guildford."
