WATCH: Animal rights activists picket Guildford abattoir

Abattoir protest

10:18am 7th March 2017
(Updated 10:20am 7th March 2017)

A group is protesting outside an abattoir at the Slyfield industrial estate in Guildford as animals arrive for slaughter.

More than 25 activists, who are members of vegan group Guildford Animal Save, are picketing.

A representative says they are protesting the use of animals for food and by products.

She said: "We are all vegan, and we are just here to bear witness to  the animals that come to slaughter in their final moments, to give them compassion and love just before they're slaughtered."

Another member said they were not there to work against the employees at the abattoir - they were there to "give comfort to the animals before they die."

She said "usually they (the animals) are kept in quite cramped, horrible conditions. So we want the last thing they see to be some happy people that show them love and compassion - and usually they respond quite well."

She said they stroke them and give them water, if possible.

While Eagle Radio was doing the interview, one truck arrived - but did not stop.
