Reports Kempton Racecourse could be saved 'inaccurate'

Kempton Park Racecourse

12:53pm 17th February 2017

The Jockey Club has denied newspaper reports that Kempton Racecourse could be saved.

Last month it announced its intention to sell the site for housing.

It's looking to generate in excess of 100-million-pounds for investment in British racing.

Kempton Park Racecourse and Redrow Homes have jointly proposed the closure of the Racecourse and building of 3,000 homes on the site.

But The Times claims there's also an alternative idea for a smaller redevelopment, which would safeguard the 139-year-old racecourse.

However in a statement, the Jockey Club says "nothing has changed" and "any suggestion to the contrary is inaccurate."

Last month Phil White, Regional Director for The Jockey Club London Region told Eagle: "They've got a huge unmet housing need in the borough and we're doing a greenbelt review and as a large landowner in the borough, we reviewed our total estate to see whether it might be something we'd consider for the Local Plan."

"It's a decision that the stewards for the jockey club didn't take lightly at all but have decided to submit our full estate here for potential development.

"There's no planning application gone in at this stage and it's very much business as usual at Kempton at the moment."

"The Jockey Club acts for the good of the sport...when an opportunity like this comes up...we've got a duty to look at that, and we feel it can generate siginificant Capitol that The Jockey Club can reinvest into the sport."

"We feel we have a duty to protect the future of the sport."
