Warnings issued over laser attacks on Hampshire Air Ambulances

Hampshire Air Ambulance

4:02pm 8th December 2016

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance service have issued a stark warning about the impact laser pens can have on the emergency services.

A total of 8,998 offences were committed in the last six years, according to a Daily Mail report.

Laser attacks can cause many problems including; distraction for the pilot, temporary flash blindness, and even eye injury.

In addition, the human eye is more sensitive to green light-laser, the most common form of laser attack.

The government is under pressure to categorise the devices as offensive weapons.

CEO Alex Lochrane said: “Any kind of laser attack is rank stupidity.

"In the best situation it would cause the pilot distraction, in the worst case it could cause damage to the pilot’s eyes and the aircraft to return to base and not participate in life saving operations.

"There’s a move by the commercial aviation world to try and push the government to classify lasers as an offensive weapon.

"That would mean that if the police apprehended an individual carrying a laser for no good reason they could be arrested.”
