Road users put on alert as temperatures plunge in Surrey and Hampshire

Surrey and Hampshire freeze as temperatures plunged overnight.

It was our first real taste of winter.

Odiham and South Farnborough were among the coldest places in the country - with lows of up to minus 6.

The onset of the cold means drivers need to take extra care on the roads.

There are certain things you can do to ensure your journey is as safe as possible.

The cold snap may catch some of us out, with ice on the roads a potential concern.

Debbie Dredge, from Katz Auto Services, has this advice: "Hitting the brakes really hard can make you lose control of the car.

"There are occassions where you just have to let the car find its route.

"You really are out of control if you hit black ice and that is why I believe driving really carefully and watching your speed is a huge factor in preventing accidents."
