Former candidate to be Guildford MP quits Labour after Corbyn re-election

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 7:58am 25th September 2016.

A Labour politician who stood to be Guildford MP at the General Election is standing down as Jeremy Corbyn is re-elected as party leader.

Richard Wilson could not beat Conservative Anne Milton when we went to the polls in 2015.

After Corbyn was re-elected with an increased majority yesterday, Mr Wilson announced he is resigning from the party.

He says it has been captured by the hard left and fatally damaged.

Mr Wilson later took to Twitter to say that he had received abuse on the social media platform following his announcement.

And said he had been approached to join other parties.

Before reflecting on what he called 'happier times'.

Meantime, there are calls for unity in the Labour party.

Mr Corbyn says he is reaching out to MPs to come on board.
