Burpham woman pleads for thieves to return her mum's memorial

memorial elephant statue

4:05pm 21st June 2016
(Updated 2:09pm 22nd June 2016)

It is not just a garden ornament - it is an irreplaceable memorial to a beloved mum and grandmother.

Sophie, who lives in Burpham, is pleading thieves to return a stolen metal elephant statue from outside their house.

She tells Eagle Radio just how upsetting the robbery is: "She absolutely loved elephants, so the day after her passing I went out in search of something to remind us of her.

I found this fantastic, beautiful metal elephant. He was incredibly special to us, and somebody took him last night.

"It's just gutting for us."

The 3 foot brass ornament was chained and drilled into a concrete post as part of a water feature.

It was taken late at night on the 20th June.

Surrey Police are investigating the burglary, and say they are particularly keen to speak to three hooded men captured on CCTV in the area at around 11pm that evening.

They are asking anyone who spots a similar item on sites such as Ebay or Gumtree to contact Surrey Police on 101, quoting crime reference number 45160052517.

Sophie says that her mother meant the world to all of them, and the ornament was a daily reminder of her memory - which is why the theft is so heartbreaking.

She has a message for the people who took it: "I'm pleading with you to please, please just bring it back.

"Take it somewhere and let somebody know where you've left it.

"It's a bit of metal to somebody, but to us, it's a massive memory in a little garden shrine to my mum, so it's everything to us as a family."
