Yateley toddler wins award after suffering eye cancer

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 7:00am 29th May 2016.

Nearly a year after an artificial eye saved his life - a little boy from Yateley receives a special award.

Taylor Treadwell, who is just four years old, suffers from a rare form of eye cancer, Retinoblastoma.

He was diagoned at 14 months - with tumours in both eyes.

Despite intensive efforts to fight the cancer, his right eye had to be removed last year.

Since then, he has won a 2015 Eagle Radio Local Heroes Awards winner.

Now, in recognition of his outstanding efforts and bravery Taylor has been named a CHECT Champion by the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT).

The CHECT Champion awards aim to recognise the courage, resilience and patience shown by all children affected by Retinoblastoma (often referred to as Rb for short) throughout treatment and beyond.

Mum Tina tells us he still has tumours in his other eye - but his positive attitude spurs others on: "He won a CHECT Champion award, which I nominated him for, purely because he's been such an inspiration to everybody else, to want to raise money and awareness for Retinoblastoma.

"Thanks to friends and family who've thought about Taylor, we've raised about £15,000 in three years

She said they called his cancerous eyes Moon Eyes - after he was diagnosed when she noticed white spots in them in photos.

Taylor told us he is pretty proud of himself - "I'm a poster boy for my Moon Eye."

Tina said she was devastated when she was told his eye would have to removed after months of treatment: "We'd fought for 20 whole months, and it (the cancer) came back very aggressively.

"We're going to give the eye a birthday - the 10th of June - and we're giving it a special celebration - purely because that's the day that we had to save his life.

"That is his new life - from the tenth of January."
