A royal visit: The Countess of Wessex visits a Guildford school

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 4:03pm 27th April 2016. (Updated at 5:27pm 28th April 2016)

There was a royal guest at the Guildford Grove Primary School on Wednesday (April 27).

The Countess of Wessex visited the school which supports children with special needs.

It was part of a 20th anniversary celebration for The Children with Special Needs Foundation.

The Foundation was set up to support local children with special needs and help their families and schools - and has supported and donated provisions to the school over the years.

Lucy Richardson the leader of the Lighthouse specialist centre for deaf children said that the children were very excited and in awe of her.

“She was absolutely lovely and she very interested in our children. She was very involved. She joined in with our story telling, listening and sensory room games.”

The Countess was given a tour of the school to see first hand how the money raised through charity was making a difference to the children's lives.

Guildford Grove is a two-form entry primary school, with a maintained nursery, a Children’s Centre and a Specialist Centre for profoundly deaf children.

The Countess has seen the work of the school on previous visits.

The school says it is always amazed by the amount of time she is happy to spend with the children - visit their website to read more.

Lucy added that there was a lot of preparation prior to her visit: "Our signing club has been rehearsing so they can show her what they have been learning. We have had some cooking going and we showed her what we made here.

"The children also practised their maths and story telling to show the countess what they have been learning here."

Later in the day the countess also visited The Park School in Woking.

This school and its children are also supported by The Children with Special Needs Foundation.
