Guildford teenager through to figure skating world championships

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 7:03am 25th March 2016.

A teenage figure skater from Guildford is about to embark on her 'American dream'...

But first, she needs to raise £3000.

Kristen Spours who's 15, has qualified to compete for Great Britain at this years World Championships in Boston.

She's the only female figure skater to qualify from Great Britain.

Costs are only part-funded by the National Ice Skating Association for the event, which takes place from March 28th to April 4th.

So it's time for Kristen to 'get her skates on" to raise as much money for her trip.

She says: "Being selected to skate at the Worlds is the next step on the road to achieving my dream of representing GB at the Olympics and is a huge honour.

"Since I was six I've been at the rink six days a week at 6:30 am. I eat breakfast on the way to school.

"I study for my GCSEs straight after school, pausing only to do my off-ice training."

Steve May, Freedom Leisure Area Manager, says: "Kristen is a very talented figure skater and we help her here at Spectrum by giving her free access to the ice rink for her training with our Ice Coach Co-ordinator Ruth Woodstock.

"She has an amazing opportunity to compete at the World Championships and we are doing all we can to spread the word about her fundraising so she can fulfil her ambition."
