Bid submitted for new secondary school in Elmbridge

school

4:03pm 10th March 2016

A bid has been submitted to open a new secondary school in Elmbridge.

ElmWey Learning Trust, which already operates Heathside School in Weybridge, wants to tackle the increasing demand for places by opening the school in the area between Walton-on-Thames and Molesey.

The trust says the predicted shortage of secondary school places in Elmbridge will be 215 by 2022.

It submitted the bid for a new school to the Department for Education in early March.

If it is approved, the school could open its doors to its first intake of 150 students in September 2019 and would eventually cater for 900 students when fully operational.

The school, which has been provisionally named Elmbridge Free School, would be a state funded Free School.

It would also be non-selective and non-faith based.

ElmWey's Executive Principal, Mrs Anne Cullum, who leads Heathside School and will oversee the new school if it is approved, said: "We want to create an outstanding school to serve the local community, a school where academic outcomes are excellent for all our students.

"We will use our experience of success at Heathside to create a school which students are proud to attend and enables them to access employment and further education without restriction."

While the bid is considered, ElmWey has set up a website for parents to register their interest.
