ACM hands in petition to lease Guildford's Electric Theatre

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 4:30pm 29th February 2016. (Updated at 4:50pm 29th February 2016)

There has been a big step in the future of Guildford's Electric Theatre.

The Academy of Contempary Music has handed in its petition to take over the site.

1,600 people including students, businesses and record labels have signed the petition.

Kainne Clements, Executive Chairman at ACM, took the petition to Guildford Borough Council along with students and handed it over at 2pm to head councillor Paul Spooner.

ACM have always said they want to keep the theatre in the community.

Kainne said:"What's going on today is more symbolic than part of any formal consultation.

"It's to express the weight and sincerity of the support that ACM has enjoyed over 20 years that's culminated in this strength of feeling for us to enjoy the space of the theatre but more importantly preserve it as a community space for exciting forward-looking, new programmes.

"It's really to represent what we can do when we come together with the community. That's kind of a blank canvas that's what's quite exciting now.

"There's an exciting opportunity for Guildford to think differently about this particular venue, to break the mould of the traditions of what one perceives theatre to be and maybe think more boldly about what it could be in the future."

A consultation on the theatre's future closes today at 5pm.

A number of other organisations have expressed an interest in taking over the site.
