ACM claims celebrity backing in bid for Electric Theatre

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 6:01am 26th February 2016.

One of the bids to take over Guildford's Electric Theatre is claiming celebrity backing.

The Academy of Contemporary Music is preparing to hand a petition to the council.

It apparently has 1,500 signatures supporting its move to take over the site.

And on Wednesday, funk singer, songwriter and producer George Clinton was at the ACM.

He told Eagle, he endorses the ACM's bid: "We want to do as much as we can when it comes to places for kids to learn the music business.

"If that is what it takes to keep it open then I am definitely down with that."

ACM owner Kainne Clemments, said: "The link to The Electric Theatre and George's support is more to do with community spirit and cultural integration through the power of music.

"The point of the theatre is that we want to foster a massive participation of people from the whole spectrum of talent in Guildford, from an iconic venue recognised as belonging to the community."

It is understood Guildford Fringe, the Boileroom and nightclub owner Michel Harper have also submitted bids.

A consultation closes on Monday.
