Parents 'must educate themselves' about online safety

(Updated 1:18pm 9th February 2016)

Parents are being encouraged to take the initiative on internet safety.

It is Safer Internet Day, with the focus on things like bullying, grooming and online scams.

Stella James from Hook started an online safety firm when her children began taking an interest in the internet.

The founder of Gooseberry Planet says it is down to parents to educate themselves so they can educate their children: "Because we're in a virtual world and because we can't see it and touch it and feel it, we tend to leave it.

"But if you're teaching your child to cross the road you would never, ever let them do it on their own, never in a million years.

"What we've got to do as adults is get involved with our children."

Stella says there are simple steps parents can take to keep themselves informed and their children safe: "It's about setting boundaries.

"You wouldn't let your son or daughter roam around the street at night.

"I know it's very hard to tell your children you want to see which apps they have got, but if I could only give one piece of advice it would be to go online and teach yourself."

Four tips for staying safe online
