Grant for Surrey NHS Trust to carry out Dementia Project

Dementia Patient

7:02am 30th January 2016

A grant has been awarded to Surrey to use technology to help people with Dementia.

Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS foundation Trust is one of only seven NHS Trusts to be awarded the grant for the 'Internet of things' project.

It will see monitors, robotics and wearables provide better healthcare for older people.

The use of remote-connectivity will enable carers to monitor a person's behaviour without needing to be in the same location.

The project will further demonstrate how the use of technology can radically change the way care is provided for patients and carers - and give patients more independence.

Fiona Edwards, Chief Executive of Surrey and Borders, said "I'm really excited that we have been given this opportunity to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their families.

"With a growing elderly population who are likely to experience long-term physical and mental health conditions, innovative new technologies such as those we are trialing through the Internet of things project will help more people to receive the support they need to live well in their own homes."

The Surrey and Borders partnership NHS Foundation Trust is the leading provider of specialist mental health and learning disability services for people of all ages in Surrey and North East Hampshire and Drug & alcohol services in Surrey, Hounslow and Brighton.

In Surrey 6,606 people have a formal disease of dementia although it is estimated that around 16,800 people have some form of the condition.

In 2013 18% of the county's population was over the age of 65 - and this is due to rise to 25% by 2037.

Approximately 700 people will take part in the project and the trust will compare 350 people's results to 350 patients suffering from dementia.

Consultant Psychiatrist and Head of Research for Dementia in Kent, Surrey and Sussex Ramin Nilsorooshan says: “We have to make change to the way that we provide care and this is the new type of innovation in this country.

"We are very delighted that Surrey has been selected as a site and Surrey and Border partnership NHS Trust where I work is leading on this project and we can provide those technology and information to patients that receive care"

The project will be made up of a combination of ten technology companies:

  • Sense. Who’s virtual, personal assistant Molly is capable of providing tailor made medical advice using advanced Al and speech recognition.
  • Intelesant, whose product Howz is able to learn dementia sufferer's routine and thus detect any deviations from the routine that may lead to dangers.
  • Healtrix, who will provide an 'Internet of things' integration Hub, as well as an altering engine that raises real time alerts and a dashboard that allows for remote monitoring and analysis of data.

Using the new technologies, the NHS trust in Surrey also hope to prevent hospital admissions and delay transferring patients to care homes.
