A Surrey Fire and Rescue challenge is spreading like wild fire

fire kit challenge

(Updated 1:46pm 19th January 2016)

Haslemere fire station are blazing a trail with a fun challenge to get crew members practising kitting-up quickly.

What started as a short video by Haslemere Happenings for the community to watch has turned into a national Fire and Rescue challenge.

Group Commander Mark Arkwell, at Haslemere fire station, said: "In our line of work, every second counts - do we ever practise how efficiently we can get prepared and ready to go to an incident? If it can help shave off just a second or two it can only be a good thing.

"It started off as a fun challenge that we held internally and then I thought I'd throw the gauntlet down to our neighbours in other Fire and Rescue Services, such as Sussex and Hampshire.

"They have been great sports and risen to the challenge  posting their entries on Twitter."

But the #Firekitchallenge seems to be spreading, with entries now coming in from across the country and even a few international attempts.

Mark says they have had enquiries from New York and Canada  over the weekend: "The rules are very simple; who can get their fire kit on the quickest. It's as simple as that.

"Although we do keep a close eye out to make sure the zips are completed done up and  frown upon those that start with bare feet."

One unexpected entrant was Andrew Impey, a nine year old boy living with autism.

He wants to visit all the fire stations in England to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity and promote awareness of autism.

With over 400 down he has around 1,500 to go.

He recently visited the some of the stations in Surrey.
