Guildford cathedral needs your snaps of angel's descent

Guildford Cathedral

3:02pm 14th January 2016

Did you watch Guildford Cathedral's iconic angel descend from its vantage point in the summer of 2000?

A call has been put out for anyone who pictured or videoed the move to get in touch.

They are wanted for the Cathedral achieve, which only has a few images and one video from the day.

Steeplejack Peter Harknett who has supervised both occasion the 15 foot angel has been removed from the cathedral top.

He told a member of the Cathedral’s Oral History team how he watched the angel being hauled up in 1963 and then gilded up on the roof : “I didn't realise then that I would get to know Gabriel quite well over the next 40 odd years."

It was brought to ground level on July 5, 2000, because of the wear and tear of the gold leaf, which is used to finish it.

Made of sheets of hand-beaten copper it weighs nearly a ton.

At the moment the oral history project, part of the People’s Cathedral, is using Heritage Lottery Funding to make urgent building repairs.

But they hope to inspire people with the history of the 20th century building while the changes take place.

They are calling for people to come forward with their own iconic memories of the Grade II listed building.

If you have any photographs of the time the angel was brought down, or if you have memories of the Cathedral you would like to share People’s Cathedral Manager Helen Ellis would love to hear from you.

You can drop into the Cathedral offices, telephone 01483 547860 or e mail Helen on helen@Guildford-Cathedral.org.
